Default Geriatric Cat Issues

Hi

I am new here. I am waiting for my Veterinarian's office to open. My 17 year old cat is not doing well. She has had a series of mini-strokes over the last two years, but otherwise was functioning fine. Tonight her breathing is quite labored and she shows no interest in food (even tuna, her favorite) Also, she is scratching at the doors and windows trying to go outside, which makes me think she wants to be alone to die.

I had to help my 14 year old dog die two years ago, and am really freaking out about Pookie. I know we can't keep them alive forever, but she has been with me my entire adult life. After Bear (my dog) died, Pookie and I went on a three month cross country road trip. She camped with me most of that time (when I wasn't sneaking her into hotel rooms!) I guess all pet lovers at some point have to face "the long good-bye".

Its great that you have this site - thanks for listening.

I've very sorry you are facing this, hopefully your Veterinarian will give you some good news this morning.
If not, try to remember that 17 years is a good long life and she has been happy and well cared for for a long time. Her long life shows what wonderful care you have given her.
