Default Hairball? or?

I have three indoor cats, all of which are on Iams Hairball formula, since they rarely go outside. One of my cats recently has started what seems like an attempt to try to get up a hairball, but nothing ever comes up. He loves to eat plastic, but I have kept that away from him for some time. Could it be something other than a hairball? I had taken him to the Veterinarian for the same symptom last year, and an xray showed nothing other than hard stools. Any ideas on a cure?

Default peaches

I had a cat a while back and she always seemed to hack like that and not always got the hairball up I would later find it in a corner or my laundry burried... it could also be slight alergies too. Has your cat ever gotten a hairball out (on your floor or something?) I'm no pro but I think cats can get athsma too... PLEASE if I am wrong then someone correct me.

I have a cat who was diagnosed years ago with asthma. For him, a change of climate helped. (We used to live in Charleston, SC, and moved to PA). It is possible.
