Doh! Cat with an open sore?

I have an outdoor cat (5 yrs old). About 3 weeks ago, I noticed he had a large lump on the back of his left rear thigh, but could not see anything because he's very figity and wouldn't let me look close. Shortly after, I saw that he had pulled out his fur in a 2" circle on the inside of his back leg thigh and the skin is missing too. Now it is quite red and he licks it all the time, but he doesn't seem to have any ill affects otherwise (he walks, jumps, eats Okay).

I'd never get him to a Veterinarian - he's very skittish! I cannot put anything on it because he just licks it off (I tried a spray anticeptic).

I don't know what to think. Is there anyone who might know or have advice? Do cats, like dogs, have the healing tongue...or will it heal on it's own?

Thanks!
Oreo's Mom

You need to try to get him to a Veterinarian. Cats do not have a healing tongue. Their tongue is very abbrasive.

If it has not healed, and since it is at the state it currently is at (from what you've described), it is not going to heal on its own.

I'm assuming that you take him to the Veterinarian every so often for it's required shots...? So there must be some way you can get your kitty there.

This could be attributed to many things... I'm not a Veterinarian, something could have bitten your cat... resulting in an infection or infestation of bugs. It could have been an allergic reaction that has just blown out of control. It could be cancer. It could be many things.

Please keep us posted with what happens.
