Lol2 cat anal sac

I was alarmed this morning to discover an open hole next to my female cat's anas. It does not appear to be sore or causing any discomfort, but it is open and pink (healthy looking). Upon further investigation I found that both dogs and cats have two of these 'anal sacs' at 5 oclock and 7 oclock around their anas (my cat's is at 7oclock). This evening when I came home from work it had closed up, and all seems well. Has anyone had any experience with this situation, and is it anything I should be worried about? I have eight cats, and I've had cats for forty years.I'd appreciate any info.

Thanks, Willie

My male Siamese had this happen just a couple weeks ago. I took him to the Veterinarian immediately, his had anal glad secretion seeping from it and he was licking it to death...The Veterinarian said it was an anal gland rupture, kept him over night (mostly because my new puppy picks on him relentlessly) the had to clean it all up, and infuse medicine in there. They sedated him for this because apparantly he's not so cooperative for them. I had to take him back a week later to have him sedated (again, because he does not cooperate very well) and put more medicine in the hole. They also put him on Amoxicillin bid (2x/day) and a rather light dose of prednisone to help with the inflammation. Interestingly, the medicine they infused is Animax (aka Panalog) which is also used to treat ear infections. He healed up quite well, although his batt did turn a little dark (the Veterinarian said most likely bruised) but he is recovering well and back to his normal Siamese self. I had no warning, no scootching of the butt, nothing. My Veterinarian said that it seems as though these sort of things run in spurts. He had seen 7 that week. Hope it helps.
