I just adopted a 7 year old cat from the local shelter. Except for watery eyes she seemed fine. Within one day she came down with an upper respiratory infection. Her nose runs incessently, she won't eat or drink and she refuses to come out from under the couch. I had her tothe Veterinarian yesterday, 5/2 and the Veterinarian gave me antibotics and gave her fluids intrvenously. Today she is just as ill. I know that it will take much longer for the medicine to have an effect but my problem is that I have another cat. A 3 year old. I have researched this illness on the internet and it seems that this infection is highly infectious. I worry about my other cat as I have no place to isolate my new cat. Also in a cat of that age - 7 years, is it possible that she carries the virus and will always be contagitious and have reocorrences which will threaten my other cat? I only have had her for 5 days and I am wondering if I should return her to the shelter. If anyone could help me I would appreciate your advice. Please email me at
