Default Bad bladder

My cat who is about a year old has what we thought was a recurring or persistent bladder infection. We did a few weeks of antibiotics but it did not go away. Recently he stayed at the Veterinarian for a week and received daily injections which cleared up the infection, but tests showed blood in the urine a week later. The Veterinarian feels he has a "bad bladder" and described it as a situation in which blood vessels like vericose veins are surfacing in the bladder walls and rupturing and inviting infection. He seems to think there is nothing else we can do. That was two weeks ago, and today I saw a large amount of blood in the urine. Has anyone ever heard of this condition?
Does anyone have a suggestion for anything we can do? I've read cranberry pills might help in keeping the infection from attaching to the bladder wall. Has anyone heard of this approach? Please help. We don't want to lose him.
