I am hoping someone will have the answers for me to alleviate my fears!
I adopted a kitten from an animal shelter last Wednesday and she seemed healthy and full of life; it wasn't until Thursday afternoon that I noticed that her eyes watered a little too much. Friday, only one eye was watering and she was sneezing quite a lot. Saturday morning, I called the woman I had spoken to at the animal shelter about the problems and she gave me an antibiotic Clavamox. I was instructed to give it to her .5 cc twice a day for a week. I know it's only been a day and a half since we gave her the medication, but today, her third eyelid is slightly risen and her eye is watering constantly and A LOT. I have a hunch that it is upper respiratory infection; if so, will she be able to get better? Will it be with her for life or could she die from it? I am very concerned right now. By the way, I have held off taking her to another Veterinarian because the Veterinarian at the animal shelter gave us the antibiotic. I AM taking her to the Veterinarian tomorrow for a check up and naturally, I will ask him/her for a second opinion on the kitten's condition. Thanks in advance for any help! EDIT: Aside from the symptoms noted above, she eats very well (more than when we first brought her home), drinks plenty of water and is full of energy. Her nose isn't runny at all. She doesn't sneeze as much as when she first came home with us. Last edited by tears_of_khrist : 07-15-2007 at 11:24 PM. Reason: More clarification |

My cat, Skeeter had upper respiratory infections most of his life. We gave him antibiotics and he got better. Sometimes it would be quite a while, other times within a week or two, he'd have another one. Your climate also make a bit of a difference. I used to live in Charleston, SC...hot & humid. When I move back home to PA, (not as hot & humid), he quit having them all together. Skeeter also had allergies. When I would do a major cleaning and stir up a lot of dust, his one eye would swell shut. I used Terramycin and that usually cleared it up within a day. Clavamox is a pretty strong antibiotic, so if it doesn't help, you know to look at other ideas. But you're taking her to the Veterinarian,, so the Veterinarian should be able to help. Keep us posted.

Lots of shelter kittens/cats and puppies/dogs will have upper respiratory infections that will clear up with treatment. Sometimes it takes a little time, sometimes they clear up quickly. If she's eating/drinking and using the litter box with no problems, and if she seems bright, happy and playfull, I wouldn't be overly concerned, but I would have my Veterinarian check it out.

I took her to the Veterinarian today. He said she had a minor cold and gave me an ointment for her eye. She also had a fever. She seems better now. Thankyou!
