they say it's pneumonia

my dog gator, has had recurring pneumonia, since we brought him home from the spca, we have been to all types of vets and no one can seem to cure him, all types of meds are used, his eyes and ears get brite red. then all of asudden he gets better for about 2 months then it happens again. he is a 2 year old pit bull, any thoughts on what this may be?
