Default puppy eye problems

We have a 4 mo. old Lhasa Apso. He has a swollen third eye lid, which we've been treating with ointment for almost two weeks now. Our Veterinarian said they're going to have to do surgery to drain in it, and then put it back down so it's not bulging out. He said they used to clip off the third eyelid, but he won't do that procedure anymore because he said they need the tear production from it. I just want to know if anyone has had this situation --and if they know the best route to take. I'm just wondering if we spend the $250 to do the surgery - is it going to happen again in the future -- and if it's true about not clipping off the eyelid, because they really do need it??? Anyone have help for me? THank you - much appreciated!

Lhaso's are notorious for that eye problem. I have had four Lhasos. I would try to see an eye specialist. Its worth the opinion of one. My Petey, a 9-year old Lhaso has had horrible eye problems. Started when he was a puppy with excessive tearing, then cataracts at age 5, then retinal detachments... I could go on and on. So far we have spent about $20,000 on his eyes. Where are you located? There is an excellent eye clinic in the Chicago area that I took my dog to, from Florida!
