My 7-year-old beagle has a heart murmur that was detected in an annual exam on Tuesday and it has me very sad and worried. This was the first time anything like this was detected at any of her exams.
The Veterinarian said she rates it a grade 3 out of 6 and said that 2 or 3 is normal when they first find one. She talked about a leaky mitral valve and gave us some information and we have an ultrasound scheduled for March 9. I asked her if we should do something sooner, if we should restrict her activity and she said no to both, that nothing should change and it's not emergent. I asked her if there is surgery to repair such a thing and she said not for dogs, that they will know more after the ultrasound and usually this is something they simply keep an eye on. I know this will eventually be what she dies of but it freaks me out so much to think of that and to think that she is dying. I know we are all dying, but to have it pushed to the front of my brain has messed me up. Everyone tells me that a heart murmur is not a death sentence and that she could live until normal beagle age, but I have some issues with death and loss from my own past and am trying to stay calm and not freak out. Anyone else have this happen? |

Here's what I found. Heart murmurs are found in both young and older dogs. Usually heart murmurs in young dogs are congenital whereas heart murmurs in older dogs are likely to have heart valve diseases. Check out Heart Murmur in Dogs - This page provides an easy to read about invidual cases of heart murmurs.
