I have a four year old golden retriever. She has experienced occasional episodes where she has rapid swallowing action, rapid tongue "lapping", and repeated neck extension and contraction movement. This may last anywhere from 30-45 seconds or continue for several minutes. During this period it is difficult to determine if she is able to breath well. She gets quite frightened and paws at you in a "help me" fashion. We cannot pinpoint any specific activity that precipitates this occurrence.
This is very unnerving to watch. Her mouth appears clear of any obstruction. It doesn't always happen after eating or drinking something (although it has at times). She can just be resting peacefully then this start happening to her. She may have this happen several times within a few day span then go for a few weeks with no occurrence. I have questioned my Veterinarian about this but they seem puzzled and have no answers. Is this some type of seizure activity that we are seeing? |

Does Your dog get bones Like Steak or Chicken Bones Not treats she could have a piece in her throat,
My Baby got in the trash can and got bones out and she did the same thing till we took her to let Veterinarian and the had to X rays because it was to far down to see.. Or she may even have a fragment stuck in her tooth. Good Luck with your puppy.... |

your dog may have a form of epilepsy, our dog gator had it and it was terrifying to see, but meds can help control it, document everything that happens during the episode and inform your Veterinarian good luck, and let us know.

I agree with deanna. One of my dogs when I was young had epilepsy. We did not need to have her on meds, her seizures happened only around stressful times...Christmas, vacations, etc. She maybe had 3-4 seizures a year if that. I would suggest it to the Veterinarian and see what he/she thinks.

I would definitely head to the Veterinarian, or if you've gone, go to another. It never hurts to have a second opinion. I could be something that's lodging incomfortably in her throat or teeth or it could be something more serious like a seizure. Either way what your dog is experiencing isn't normal and needs to be figured out.
Good luck! Sara |
