New dog with diaheria

I just adopted an eleven year old cocker spaniel from the pound. She did great the first few days I had her but for the last 3 or 4 days she has had diaheria. She hardly eats anything and when she does she vomits and has diaheria. I have been told that it may be due to the change in her food (I don't know what she had been fed before) and the stress of being given up by her owner, spending two days in the shelter and then being brought into my home. I am not sure but would appreciate any info anyone can give me. Maybe someone else's pet has had a similar experience or can share tips on how to make her feel better. Thanks.

Other than the vomiting/diarrhea, how is she acting? Is she lethargic and dumpy, or is she otherwise acting OK? Is she drinking? Is there any blood in her stools?

It's possible this is all due to stress and the change in food. But it's also possible she picked something up at the shelter; either a virus or a bacterial infection. It's also possible she picked up an intestinal parasite, like giardia or coccidia. So you might want to give your Veterinarian a call, just to be on the safe side.

If she's not drinking, can't keep water down, or if there's blood in her stool, you definately want to have the Veterinarian check her over.

And how can you possibly diagnose a case of diarrhea as stress induced without seeing the dog...or the poo? Maybe it's viral? Maybe it's coccidia or giardia? Maybe you should worry less about selling your products and worry more about the animals health. Animals who need to be seen by a Veterinarian for proper diagnosis. You can't cure a virus or kill intestinal parasites with propriatery formulas, no matter how good you think they are. Personally, it sounds like you're selling snake oil, to me.

Well, since you say you "don't know" what food it was eating before you got it, then the odds of you accidentially feeding it the same food are bad.

As you might know, to change a dog or cat's food without trama means you slowly mix the old with the new over time, gradually adding more of the new and less of the old. Since you obviously did not do this, you cannot rule out "food change shock".

Go see your Veterinarian.
You should always take a new pet to get a check up, NO MATTER where you got it from.

The Dog is stressing, no doubt about that.

I work at a local shelter and this is common when dogs are adopted. When the dogs are at shelters they have horrible diets because its all based on donations. Have her checked at the Veterinarian just in case. I am sure she is just nervous because most likely she was traumatized by being put in a shelter from a previous owner (being 12 and all).

I do agree that it could be a combination of stress and food change, however, a Veterinarian visit would be best as it could be viral, bacterial or parasitic infection causing this.

If the Veterinarian gives a clean bill of health, try feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice but make sure the rice is over cooked. You'd want to feed that until things clear up, then slowly introduce the food you choose to feed.

It could deffinetly be the food change.
You should try putting her on a natural food like California Natural.
