Default constipated senior dog

my 14 ,almost 15 year old mid size terrier is constipated. he won't go for a day or two then will suddenly go.this has ben going on for days.he'll stand outside and try but with no success/.i talked to my Veterinarian (over the phone)and he said that it's his back(the dog's not the vets) that's causing the problem/. i'm not so sure of that really.i add olive oil to his food and i believe it's helping but not sure.at tis time he's taking lasix (water around the heart)and pain pill for his back. i don't know how to aid my dog at the times he really needs to go and i would really love any advice i can get that will help him do the 'necessary'./

I would first try something simple like adding fiber to his diet.

You can do this simply by adding plain canned pumpkin - just make sure it is PLAIN pumpkin.

Adding the oil is what I would have recommended....We use Corn Oil, however. Our senior horse gets a couple of TBS over her food each day...also helps with her coat and adds a little weight as she has trouble keeping weight on. Keep doing that I would say..and ask your Veterinarian if a change in diet might work. Maybe switching from kibble to a good senior canned food (if she is on kibble)..or any good, senior diet.
I like the pumpkin idea!! My dog won't eat veggies though...so...not sure if that would work with a fussy eater. lol But on that idea...maybe you could find something that has a lot of fiber in it that your dog will gobble up.
