Default Parvo

Hi i am new here and in desperate need of any info on parvo or if someone has had experience with it. How do you kill this virus in your home? I also have tons of questions!

Or if anyone can point me in the right direction on how to get this virius out of your home i would appreciate it. Seems once you have this it is almost impossible to get rid of it in your living enviroment (home) Even the Veterinarian recommendations seems to deem impossible to get rid of it.

We have 2 dogs that have parvo. Can they keep transmitting this disease back and forth to each other? One recovered at the Veterinarian and now the other one is there. One is 12 weeks and the other is 6 months and both have been vaccinated. If they have been vaccinated how can they get this virus.

ALL your dogs should be vaccinated against parvo. There is no just reason for any pet owned by a person (as opposed to a wild dog) to have this.

That being said, vaccinate any uneffected dogs NOW.

Parvovirus is extremely HARD to kill. It resists most anti-virus sanitation methods, things like detergents, alcohol, and common disinfectants have NO effect. It is even resistant to heat or cold.

There *IS* one way to kill it though, and that is a Clorox solution diluted one part to 30 parts water (4 oz Clorox in 1 gallon of water) this has been found to be effective in disinfecting inanimate objects such as clothing, floors, kennels, etc. However, it is impractical, if not impossible, to disinfect public streets, parks, etc. Isolation of infected dogs is another method of control, moderately effective. Both of these measures will help reduce the amount of contagious virus in the environment, but only a full series of vaccinations, with appropriate booster intervals, will help to control the source of infection, the contagious shedding dog.

This should serve as a lesson to you, as harsh as it is, to ALWAYS vaccinate your dog!!!!

Both dogs were vaccinated. These dogs have had all the appropriate vaccinations. Someone with this virus brought 2 dogs into the Veterinarian with it and ours still got it. With the vaccinations they still got it so in other words vaccinating them appropriately still does not protect them. With parvo there is really no lesson to be learned as this dog came to our home and apparently had this. And then our other dog also got this even with every percaution we took instructed by our Veterinarian. So it is not at any of our fault our dogs got this virus. There are also several dogs that have been to this same Veterinarian that are comming down with this and 2 died. Ours have not. The Veterinarian sees to think this came from when the breeder we bought the dog from came in for the 1st puppies shots and there were 2 rottweilers there at the same time with the virus and that is where the puppy we bought got it from.

Well, my sincerest apologies to you for the lecture, feel free to me...

But hey, WOW you had them vaccinated (boasters too?) and they STILL caught it????

Something was terribly wrong with the vaccine, and personally (not a lawyer or Veterinarian, don't assume anyone on here is) I would be contacting a lawyer, because I smell a lawsuit in the making. NO WAY they should have caught this if you did your part as you should...

Incredibly sad, and I feel for you...

Thanks for the apology! Is there anything that someone might know or a good place to check out that might know about this virus. That is what i can't figure out is how the older dog got this with his vaccinations. To many different opinons from vets! That is why i thought maybe someone on here might have had this too and knows and can share some info that may help us.

You use the same Veterinarian? Might be the Veterinarian you use has a bad vaccine source.

Already posted all I know on it, perhaps others will chime in.

I hope someone knows something. No the Veterinarian we started with where the older dog got the shots we don't go to anymore (and that is a story in itself) We have a new Veterinarian that we use now!

One thing comes to mind now that I think about it. Did you follow up with the booster shots? It's easy to forget, but they are important. Just a thought...
