Confused Our english bulldog died. Why did he find a hiding place?

My husband and I just lost the love of our lives, Oliver, our english bulldog of 7+ years. Two days ago, he passed away from what we believe to have been bloat. I am haunted by the fact that Oliver ran off and found an unusual hiding place in our yard to die. It tears me up to think that if he were in the house, I could have done something for him. Does anyone know why a dog will find a hiding place to die? And why is this a common symptom related to bloat? Any comments, suggestions, or questions are greatly welcomed and appreciated!
