whinning

hi my name is chyah (hi-Ya) my dog Jethro is 11 months old and is a non stop whinner. i do not know what to do for him. know matter whaat i seem to do he still whines. is there any suggestions for breaking this annoying habit of his.

Hi Chyah,
Does Jethro whine even when you're there with him? If so it could be a health issue. If it is only when you leave or are asleep then it may be an anxiety problem. My dog whined at night until he was almost a year old. It made it very hard to sleep. What I did to finally stop it was to provide him a bed and placed it right beside mine, with one of my shirts in it. I don't know for sure why that worked, but it did. I don't know how much this will help you, but I hope it will a little.

Determine what causes his whining. If the whining is caused by anxiety of unfamiliar place, try placing towel which has been used by you. By smelling the your odor, it gives the dog a sense of security.

The question that is unclear is when does he not whine. If you are holding him does he whine. Does he whine when you pet him?

Without more information it is hard for all of us to respond accurately. However if he does not whine when you hold him or pet him but does all the rest of the time he may just want your attention especially if give it to him. If you respond by picking him up and holding him to make stop whining you have just told him whine and I will pick you up. Sometimes we just have to bite the bullet as terrible it sound, (as long your puppy is clean and well fed,) and ignore the puppy when he whines. Do not do any thing to make him stop. Eventually when he realizes no one will respond he will stop. I seen this take several days in puppies even have been rewarded for this inappropriate behavior by our responding to them or giving in to them.
