My guess would be after the algae is gone. Keep in mind, I haven't been able to keep a fish alive in years....

You're welcome...and I may be interested in a while. Right now I just don't have the time. I have 2 boys, one 5 and one almost 2, 4 cats, a new 9 week old puppy, and a husband who just (without notice) found himself unemployed. My life is a little too busy now for that. Besides, my 10 gallon is currently being used by a hermit crab....

They (well, as of the other day, it...one died) are my 5 year olds...they are WAY easier than fish!!!! I had problems with water quality, I had overload levels of ammonia, and I couldn't get it out....I have no idea why...I had fish when I lived in South Carolina, and I never had that problem before...I was baffled.

Default Just replying

The amonia thing might have been a little because of wht the quality of the water in your city too, I just found out that all the chemicals we were using were hurting our fish not helping them. Sorry to hear about your boy's crab it is always sad when a beloved pet ( OF ANY KIND) dies. My best wishes TTYL

What gets me is I have well water. I used that, I used bottled water, I tried everything I could think of, and NONE of the products I used removed the ammonia. EVERYTHING else tested out fine. So I have given up for a while. Isn't is scarey to think that what kills tropical fish we are putting into our own bodies?!

Default re: Ammonia in Water...

I don't know if you tried this, but the best way to remove ammonia in water is by adding anti ammonia rocks. These rocks "eat" the ammonia.

The ammonia does not come from the water you put in the tanks per say- it is a natural excretement of fish. In nature, fish don't typically live in enclosed spaces for a long period of time, which is why the build up occurs in tanks and not in the wild. In the wild, the ammonia is absorbed naturally by rocks and micro-organisms that already exist.

I hope you find this explaination helpful should you chose to get another tank later on.

Default Alge Removal

Alge... is virtually impossible to NOT get in your tank... and equally impossible to remove it without killing your fish.

The only thing you really can do, is maintain the level of alge in your tank. Add that Alge killer that you've already been adding. :-) And scrape the sides of the tank, turn over the top layer of rocks, and scrape the rocks/decorations in your tank. :-P I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but... it's the truth. Believe me, I feel your pain, I wish there were a way to eliminate the nasty stuff.

If you discover some new method to get rid of it... please let me know. It would probably become a best seller item with fish products. :-P
