Lol2 Chloe

Hi my name is adriean and I am a new member who has q.s regarding my 12 year old cockerspaniel/poode mix named Chloe. Chloe is 12 yrs old and I adopted her back in 05/07 shortly thereafter within 3 weeks time she went into renal failure and was hospitalized for 17 days fighiting this disease and we won. During the first 3 weeks of owning her I noticed she was not potty trained, she belonged to and elderly woman who obviously hit her,and when she passed away the family took Chloe in to be put down, they didn't want her. I have since been trying to potty train her but it seems impossible and now I'm beginning to wonder if there is a physical problem or is it age. What I notice is that when she urinates on the pad, afterwards while walking away she is still dripping but also when she has a bowel movement she has one then takes a step goes again then takes another step and so on and so on until she is done. She has also started to urinate on my bed this will be the second time she does this, I'm not sure she realiazes she is doing this but she knows enough to move away after she does it. Therefore I do not know what to think, is she just being difficult to train or is there a problem. I have noticed her drinking more water than usual so I stopped dry food and prednisone which she was on for allergies to her skin. I'd appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks
adriean

Dear Adriean:

Your story is heart warming. Your dog is lucky to have you.

I think that you should make a visit to your Veterinarian about her bladder problems. It sounds like it could be a number of things, especially since she has had health problems in the past. I don't think it is entirely a training issue because it's not normal to need to walk in order to do one's business.

Please let us know what you discover at the Veterinarian's.

Best wishes,
Jackie

Red face Veterinarian visit

latergatorj thanks for your reply, we will be visiting with our Veterinarian this week. Since Chloe is a senior perhaps there will be nothing wrong, just a habit that can't be changed. So I will then have to work around it and with a little patience maybe I can.

Doh! Chloe's Veterinarian visit

Chloe went to the Veterinarian today and we found that she had a little bit of a weak bladder but was not enough to warrant medication the biggest problem is she's hard to train maybe because of her age, who knows? I just have to keep working with her to see if it will sink in that you do not go on the carpet or the bed but on the pad provided. The other night I took her out to urinate before bed and she and my other dog sniffed around for about 20 minutes, my other dog did what he needed to do, but she didn't go at all so I figured she didn't need to. Well guess what? After being outside we went in and the first thing she did was go on the carpet. Go Figure!
