Default Dog illness mystery...Can you help?

I have a male beagle that came from a rescue. Have had about a year and a half and is presumed to be about 4 years old. He presented with the symptoms I will mention about a year ago but it only lasted about a day and the Veterinarian didn't have any answers but prescribed some pain meds just in case. This is what he will do...He will start barking and/or whining loudly like he is in pain. He will walk around and then will sometimes lay down with his back legs out and slide his abdomin across the floor. He will then sometimes start licking his back foot or groin area. He will also then try to find something to bite on. Not aggressively but if there is a chair leg or something he will try to gnaw on it. He will come close to me or a family member and will usually be panting. Never acts aggressive but he is passive by nature and may have been abused prior to us adopting him. Not sure. He will then act fine for a few minutes and do it again. It might happen 5 or 6 times in a row or may stop completely for some time. Last time it happened he did it in the middle of the night for a few hours and by the time I got him to the Veterinarian in the morning he had stopped and she said without being able to observe the behavior she didn't know what it was. It's been about a year since he did it and he has started it back up again today. I thought I would see if anyone else has seen or experienced anything like this before.

I'm sorry I don't know what could be going on with your Beagle.

My suggestion would be to record the episode on video the next time it happens and bring the video to the Veterinarian.

Default Dog Illness

Might be parasite related. Dogs can get pinworms like the ones people have...they migrate at times. Also tapeworm segments move around in the back end sometimes.
Could be fleas biting the dog too.
Then there are a lot of other issues that it can be as well...since the Veterinarian isnt helping the problem you might want to check out http://nzymes.com and maybe contact them...they have a lot of good products that will help your pet.

I had a friend that had a shelty that did weird things like that when she heard very high pitched sounds like sirens. Often times they were far enough away that you couldn't hear them but the dog could. Is that a possibility with your dog?

Default Strange Behavior

You dog is most likely having a behavioral type seizure. Most seizures are easy to identify. There is total lose of body control and violent shaking of large muscle groups. However a seizure is any abnormal function due to a malfunction at some location in the brain. Therefore a seizure can be any strange behavior. The fact that you have normal periods between the episodes and even long periods with no episodes point to seizure activity. Video of the episodes may help your Veterinarian. Bottom line the only way to prove it is having an EEG done on your dog during the episode.
