Since you got him from the shelter you already, very likely, prolonged his life FAR more then what it would have been. Dog's in shelters rarely make it out alive, most end up being put to sleep.
The service you did to this living creature is etched on your soul, and the mercy you have shown by sharing your home and your heart when it was needed most will not go unrewarded in the grand scheme of life.
